A Market and Paua Shell Preparations...

It was a fairly fresh and gusty day at the Havelock North Art and Craft market at the weekend. I was lucky to have my sons on board to help unload and load and they were quite happy to scooter along to the skate park down the road and entertain themselves - another great thing about 12 & 9 year old boys :)  I enjoyed their company and my lovely customers of course!

On the making front, I finally got to drill some more paua - a bit of a mission on the health and safety front with the protective gear necessary, water bath to prepare etc, but once I'm set-up it's all go and quite quick.  Only one casualty and that was due to me dropping a piece on the concrete floor rather than the actual drilling - can you spot the broken shell?

Only the tip broke off so it might be salvagable with some grinding and polishing ....

And after selecting the colourways to suit the shell and getting together all the beads, crystals, and freshwater pearls, I'm up to the part I love the most - the actual embellishing!  I'm doing some new colour combos which is rather exciting - here's a sneak peek...

Bottom left is my current favourite, followed closely by top 2nd from right - what takes your eye?

    1. Thanks Stacey, I can't wait either! They go from being shells and beads/crystals/pearls, to all coming together into a piece I love - even the colour ways that I wouldn't normally wear/like! I haven't worked that magic out yet :)
