How it all began for me … Jewellery Making that is!

Do you ever think about how you started doing something you love?  Whether it be cooking or sewing or clay bird shooting(!) or dirt bike riding?
I sometimes like to look back on where I started to see how far I’ve come – particularly if I’m having a hard time making something work such as a new technique I’m trying to master, or a piece that just isn’t coming together they way I want it to.
As I’m sure I’ve mentioned before, I was very lucky growing up to have an artistic mother so I was exposed to lots and lots of different mediums and creative ventures.  Predominantly a potter, I can tell you anything you want to know about the process from start to finish just from what I watched mum do.  Sadly, it aint my thing and clay does not do what I want it to, so I might know how to do it but you’re not going to see me do it!  I’ve also watched her paint, gone to night classes with her as a pre-teen/teen and learnt spinning, weaving, sewing and have also taken her to a couple in my late teens – calligraphy (love it!).
Mum was(is) also big on library books and there was a ready source available where I learnt to do lots of things – batik, macramé, bone-carving – I’d almost forgotten about this until I recently found the carved heart I made at 17!

But my one true creative love .. jewellery design and creation did not start until 4 years ago when I happened to take birthday girl Maria (then 7) and her mum to the local bead shop to make a necklace each as a fun girlie treat.  One simple floaty necklace later I was hooked and the next week was back to buy a kit.  The rest, as they say, is history – lots and lots of playing, making, experimenting and learning!!
So tell me, how did you get into doing what you love?

  1. My next door neighbour taught me to crochet when I was about 7, though I hadn't done any for about 10 years so when I wanted to make a tea cosy and realised I couldn't knit out came the crochet again, and now I'm well and truly hooked :-)
