Measuring your Bracelet/Wrist Size...

While measuring a customers wrist at a market this weekend, I was reminded how few of us know our bracelet size which can be really frustrating when you want to buy one on-line without being able to try on - even worse if it's for a gift!

So here's my easy guide to getting a great bracelet fit..

First measure your wrist at it's widest point, ie, your wrist bone.  You can use a flexible tape measure, even a piece of fabric or string (then measure the string on a flat ruler to get the length).

measuring at my wrist bone my measurement is 16.5cm

measure as shown
Then add 2 - 2.5cm (or 3/4 to 1 inch if you need to measure in inches).  This will give you a comfortable fit.
Note: If you prefer a snug fit to your bracelets only add 1.5cm (1/2 an inch), if you like a loose fit add 3cm or a little more (1 1/4 inch).

When buying a bracelet on-line make sure the description talks about the inner dimension of a bracelet - it may measure 18cm when stretched out on a ruler, but if it has bulky beads and components, the inner dimension will be much less than this when worn on a real live wrist!

And if you're buying a bracelet for a gift and don't know the recipients wrist size I suggest two things :
  1. Try on one of their favourite bracelets yourself and if it's a good fit on you chances are they have a similar size wrist and you can go by your own measurements.
  2. Buy them an adjustable bracelet - one with an extension chain or links is a fabulous idea!

Interesting fact.... a 'medium' adult women's wrist size is around 19cm or 7.5inches.

  1. Mel, that's really good to know - especially since I love bracelets and see lots of gorgeous ones online!

    1. Bracelets and rings - can be two of the hardest things to buy without trying on, but really truly a 'breeze' if you know your measurements ;)
